Examining the workability of administering NEET-UG in a computer-based format
In the realm of education, several significant developments have taken place recently.
The Centre has established a panel in July 2024, with the primary objective of ensuring a transparent, smooth, and fair conduct of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and National Eligibility Test (NET) exams, administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The high-level panel, headed by the former Chief of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), R Radhakrishnan, has proposed a novel approach for NEET-UG. The suggestion is for a multi-stage testing system, aiming to enhance the rigour and fairness of the examination process.
However, the spotlight has not been favourable for all exams. UGC-NET was cancelled in 2024 due to concerns about its integrity, following reports that the exam had been compromised. The examination is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The National Eligibility Test has also been under scrutiny, with allegations of irregularities, including leaks, coming to light. This has led to a push for reforms, with discussions revolving around the potential switch to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for NEET.
The feasibility of this switch is being evaluated by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). Meanwhile, the second cohort of India's AI Mission is focusing on reasoning and Indic languages.
In other education-related news, the State Bank of India (SBI) Foundation is extending its support to 23,230 meritorious students under the Asha Scholarship. The commitment is a substantial ₹90 crore, aimed at providing financial assistance to deserving students.
In a separate development, exporters are disputing Indonesia's notification of aflatoxins in peanuts three months after the cargo landed. This has resulted in a halt to peanut buys, causing a stir in the agricultural sector.
These updates underscore the dynamic and evolving nature of the educational and agricultural sectors in our country. Stay tuned for more updates as these stories continue to unfold.
