Overview

Find out which college backpacks crossed the finish line in our ultimate test, along with our methods for discovery and what's most important to look for in a killer backpack.

How We Tested

We drew on our extensive experience in the backpack space to find the best packs for heading back to school. Using favorite brands, we selected flagship products and considered attributes like materials, straps, capacity, laptop and tech storage, organization options, and aesthetics. After getting hands-on with these packs, we uncovered the cream of the crop.

What to Look For

  • Size: Most backpacks for academia range from 15 to 30 liters, but some may exceed 30 liters. The more storage space, the more you're able to bring along!
  • Materials: Top-tier backpacks are constructed from high-density nylons, poly blends, waxed canvas, or proprietary materials like Dyneema or CORDURA. Some bags may feature reinforced sections for added durability.
  • Hardware: Sturdy zips, quality buckles, and reinforcements can elevate a backpack from naff to awesome.
  • Laptop & Device Storage: If you're a tech whiz, look for backpacks with dedicated laptop sleeves or compartments. Some feature additional spaces for tablets or second devices.
  • Organizational Amenities: College bags are often equipped with slips and holders for pens, notebooks, and textbooks, as well as pocket spaces for smaller tech items. Many college backpacks boast cord and charging cable loops too.
  • Weather-Resistance: Distinct climates and weather conditions may call for a waterproof pack. While it may cost a little more, a weatherproof backpack will keep your laptop and textbooks dry and secure in a heavy downpour.
  • Style: College backpacks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles to cater to your preferences. From modern vintage reissues to sleek and minimalist contemporary designs, there's a bag for every taste!

Jansport Suede Campus Backpack

Pros
  • Simple design doesn't overcomplicate things
  • Easy to adjust straps
  • Easy to see inside
Cons
  • Mesh water bottle pouch is small

Grabbing a classic iconic Jansport Backpack was all the rage back when you were in elementary school, but the Suede Campus takes that tried-and-true design to the next level. Snag this gem for just $65, and get ready to roll with its 32-liter capacity, compressed when needed, and accoutrements like a white interior lining that makes it easy to see inside and a rear laptop compartment. With sustainability on the brain, Jansport backs up their product with a limited lifetime warranty. Sure, you had the classic JanSport as a kid, but this budget-friendly Fresher is better than ever.

The Good

The old JanSport bag used to be my go-to when I was in school. I remember how the zippers would come nearly all the way down on the sides, making it hard to keep closed when the interior was loaded. However, the Suede Campus Backpack eliminates those issues with the compression strap and new, more structured pockets and higher zippers. So while it's not quite as easy to open and close as the cheap WallyWorld specials, it's not a hassle to access your belongings. The main compartment up front is even big enough to fit my long iHome keyboard in with room to spare. And the rear laptop compartment isn't too tiny for your charger too! Combine that with comfortable, adjustable straps, and you can see why this Jansport sneaks up on my list of faves.

The Not So Good

The only issues I really had with the Suede Campus Backpack involve the trivial mesh water bottle pouch. This little pocket is only great for plastic water bottles, and my 32-ounce metal flask doesn't fit at all. Additionally, the topmost exterior pocket is a bit shallow, making it difficult to carry smaller tech gear or sunglasses without losing them in the depths.

Verdict: Simple and affordable, the JanSport Suede Campus Backpack doesn't complicate things and has enough features to keep you satisfied. We do wish its water bottle pouch were larger, but this bag still stands out as an awesome find for back-to-school shoppers.

Incase ICON Lite Backpack

Pros
  • Designed to protect laptops and devices
  • Reasonably priced
  • Deceptively spacious
  • Can stand up on its own
Cons
  • Rigidity makes it sit high up
  • External pockets are narrow and difficult to see inside

Running around from campus to job interviews requires a pack that can keep up, and what better option than the Incase ICON Lite Backpack? At $110, this badass backpack will keep your technology safe and secure while looking stylish. It offers advanced protection for your device with a cushioned compartment and soft-lined interior pockets. It also features a convenient weatherproof exterior and has plenty of interior slots and pouches for all your gear. Need we say more?

The Good

This Incase backpack rocks! It's got a rigid structure that keeps you at the top of your game—it stands up on its own, even when fully loaded with books and gear. The backpack's weatherproof exterior is a must for the unpredictable campus weather. Personally, I've got a weakness for soft-lined laptop sleeves, so I was stoked to see a padded pocket with a protective cover that shields your devices from harm. The interior lining is also coated with a waterproof zipper—perfect for a sudden downpour during midterm madness. Additionally, the bag has several pockets inside and out, including a big central pouch for books and a couple of compartments up top for smaller items like keys and your favorite lip gloss.

The Not So Good

There were a few niggling issues with the Incase ICON Lite. First, its external pockets were pretty narrow—finding your things inside could be like playing a game of "Where's Waldo?" because you couldn't see much inside them. Additionally, the bag was a bit rigid when not fully loaded, making it sit up a bit higher on your back than other packs I tested. Adjusting the straps is a decent enough experience, but it could be simpler because even when adjusted, the straps still felt like they dug a little into my shoulders.

Verdict: Low-profile and sleek, the Incase ICON Lite is an excellent starter backpack for multitasking college students. It protects your devices with soft-lined interiors and has a robust weatherproof exterior to keep all your precious cargo safe and dry. Despite some minor setbacks with the straps and pockets, this backpack holds up when it counts.

Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech

Pros
  • Very attractive
  • Has good weatherproofing ability
  • Loaded with organizational features and loops for add-ons
  • Back panel is really comfortable
Cons
  • Main compartment could use more pockets
  • Shoulder straps are a bit rigid

You think backpacks are just black or blue? Think again! The Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech boasts an eye-catching monochromatic design made from a recycled 1,000-denier nylon exterior that's both lightweight and weatherproof. Offering a convenient 24.3L capacity, it features a 15-inch laptop sleeve and multiple slips and pockets for all your school essentials. Pair that with a durable and comfortable padded back panel, and you're ready to conquer campus!

The Good

The Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech is seriously hard to beat. It has all the makings of a colossal collector's item: sleek design, innovative organizational features, and meticulous attention to detail. I adore the modern vintage vibes it exudes, plus it's as brave as it is beautiful. A soft-lined laptop compartment and usable exterior pockets add bonus points for functionality.

Speaking of the laptop compartment, you tightwads can rest easy knowing the Rover Pack Tech will keep your device guarded better than the Fort Knox does gold bars. While the laptop compartment doesn't have coated zippers like the two exterior pockets do, it keeps your tech safe with flexible internal pockets. I also love that the back panel feels super comfortable and cushioned, which helps keep me from getting an ache in my back after a long day of classes.

The Not So Good

While I loved the pocket configuration and organizational amenities of the Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech, the main compartment inside lacked pockets for smaller items. Sure, it offered a spacious central chamber to put textbooks and folders, but I'd have preferred a few more options to keep my belongings separated. The shoulder straps were rather rigid as well, and at times, I found the bag sitting up a bit higher on my back than ideal.

Verdict: The Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech wows with its eye-catching design, weatherproofing ability, and a multitude of pockets and compartments. It has great organization features and although it could use a few more pockets, it serves up serious style and keeps your tech safe.

The North Face Kaban 2.0 Backpack

Pros
  • Engineered specifically for commuting to school or work
  • Superb pocket design
  • Offers solid weather resistance
  • Sports a sleek and modern exterior design
  • Sternum strap for extra support
Cons
  • Shell material collects dust and dirt easily

Prepare to shine bright like a diamond (or more accurately, have your bag shine like a mofos) with The North Face Kaban 2.0 Backpack. This powerhouse bag is specialized for commuting, featuring a durable recycled 300-denier polyester shell laminated with a weatherproof coating and reinforced with a 1680-denier ballistic nylon base. It also boasts a 15-inch laptop compartment, a pair of water bottle sleeves, and tons of internal storage pockets to help you stay organized from sunup to sundown.

The Good

Simply put, The North Face Kaban 2.0 Backpack whips it! With its stellar pocket design, modern look, and stalwart organizational abilities, this backpack will protect and house all your essentials with aplomb. The bag has a hidden charm all its own when you open the top compartment: a super secret pocket that I only discovered after hours of rigorous testing. Additionally, the zippers on all interior pockets are coated for seamless protection against rain.

But wait, there's more! This backpack has an extra feature for additional stability sans trips to the gym – a sternum strap that takes the pressure off your shoulders and distributes it to your midsection. I will say the hidden laptop compartment is a teeny bit vulnerable to moisture, but it still offers excellent protection for your precious tech. It fits my 15-inch MacBook Pro with a charger, iPad, and keyboard inside like a glove.

The Not So Good

Every rose has its thorn, and although The North Face Kaban 2.0 Backpack shines like a superstar, it has a couple of small weaknesses. The shell material collects dust and dirt somewhat easily, requiring regular cleanings to keep it looking fresh. Good thing it's so stinkin' awesome, right?

Verdict: Featuring sturdy pockets, sleek aesthetics, and solid weather resistance, The North Face Kaban 2.0 Backpack is perfect for students and professionals alike. It's more of a niche backpack, but if you're looking for something that offers hidden pockets, weather protection, and practicality, you can't go wrong.

Bellroy Transit Workpack

Pros
  • Engineered for students and workers
  • Made with eco-friendly materials
  • Has a professional aesthetic for the workplace
  • Great pocket designs
Cons
  • Could benefit from a more rugged shell material
  • No water bottle pockets

You don't have to choose between looking good and having the functional features you need for school, thanks to the Bellroy Transit Workpack. This eco-friendly backpack is designed to impress with a recycled weatherproof exterior, 20-liter capacity, an externally accessible 16-inch laptop pocket, and full clamshell opening for easy access. Bellroy's focus on sustainability ensures a stellar bag that won't break the bank (or the planet).

The Good

From its attractiveness to its eco-friendly materials, the Bellroy Transit Workpack sells itself! The backpack's decentralized pocket design makes me all tingly inside. It has convenient pockets for all your school supplies—from chargers and headphones to pencils and erasers. The bag even has a couple of topside zippers! Refreshingly, the Bellroy Transit Workpack sports a ventilated back padding system, making it stylish and comfortable on your back.

I love how the bag zips open fully, making it easy to access my belongings without digging around aimlessly. Combined with the telescopic laptop pocket, it makes me feel like James Bond with my magic backpack. And to top it all off, the weatherproof exterior is treated with 100% recycled materials!

The Not So Good

There are only minor drawbacks to the Bellroy Transit Workpack. Its lack of water bottle pockets can leave you high and dry, especially if you're lugging a water bottle made of materials other than plastic. The shell materials could also be a bit more durable for long-term use. But when you consider the sleek design and attractive price point, these minor issues pale in comparison.

Verdict: The Bellroy Transit Workpack is a waste (no pun intended) of money on a backpack that has everything you could ever need for college—trendy design, environmental consciousness, and built-in tech storage. While it lacks water bottle pockets and could be more robust, it's still a fantastic option for any back-to-school shopper.

Aer Tech Pack 3

Pros
  • CORDURA shell is best constructed here
  • Pockets are great for organization
  • Highly attractive design
  • Favorable shoulder straps are easy to adjust
Cons
  • Dirt shows up on the shell easily
  • Pricey
  • Heavy

Sophisticated, stylish, and sturdy best describe the Aer Tech Pack 3, which comes in at $219. This bag showcases an 840-denier nylon face with a weather-resistant coating and a water-resistant 1,680-denier CORDURA shell for unmatched durability. All the organizational amenities you want are tucked inside this sleek package, perfect for a student who doesn't want to skimp on design or functionality.

The Good

Say you want a backpack with great pockets and storage and a kick-ass design without sacrificing the durability—look no further than the Aer Tech Pack 3. I dig the interior organizational features, like plentiful pockets to keep everything tidy and a top compartment for quick access to tech accessories. And with shoulder straps that adjust easily, this backpack is a dream to carry around campus. It'll keep everything you need close by and your back supported without weighing you down.

The Not So Good

The Aer Tech Pack 3 boasts enviable construction, but there are a few downsides to consider. The bag tends to gather dirt easily, so you'll want to keep a cleaning cloth handy. Its hefty $219 price tag is not exactly budget-friendly, nor does the bag offer a water bottle pocket for hydrating on the go. But still, it's a top-notch backpack for those who require a well-constructed, good-looking backpack without skimping on organizational features.

Verdict: If you're all about a durable bag with sleek good looks and plenty of storage space, the Aer Tech Pack 3 fits the bill. It's pricier and tends to collect dirt, so keep that in mind when making your decision.
