Daily update for August 20:
In the aftermath of Hurricane Erin, the U.S. East Coast is grappling with the remnants of the storm, which moved away from the coast without making landfall but has left dangerous surf, rip currents, and tropical storm conditions in its wake.
As of August 28, 2025, the hurricane was first named the fifth storm and the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, rapidly intensifying to a Category 5 hurricane over the Atlantic before weakening. The storm's center passed about 200 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and it moved northeastward off the coast without making landfall.
Despite no U.S. landfall, coastal areas experienced hazardous conditions such as life-threatening surf and rip currents, prompting warnings to avoid swimming. The storm’s broad wind field extended up to 300 miles from its center, causing tropical storm-force winds offshore.
Before affecting the East Coast, Erin caused impacts including heavy rains, flooding, power outages (over 159,000 customers in Puerto Rico), rough seas, and dangerous swimming conditions in the Caribbean region. By August 25-26, Erin had completed extratropical transition south of Nova Scotia and was moving away from U.S. coasts but still posed threats to Bermuda under tropical storm warning.
North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency, and evacuation orders were issued due to the storm's tropical conditions on the Outer Banks. The weather forecast can be checked locally for current conditions.
