The scholarship, which has been running for three years, aims to attract young doctors to the region for both general medical care in rural areas and for the county's own clinic. County Commissioner Peggy Greiser emphasizes this goal, stating, "We want to ensure that our communities have access to quality healthcare, and by offering this scholarship, we hope to attract talented medical students to our county."

To be eligible, applicants must be students of human medicine at German or EU universities. Priority will be given to applicants with a regional connection, such as residence, school attendance, or voluntary work in the county. Although academic excellence and/or financial need are usually considered, the eligibility criteria can vary slightly each semester or year, so it's best to consult the official announcement or contact the County Schmalkalden-Meiningen administration or their educational support office directly.

Selected applicants will receive €500 per month for a maximum of five years. The work can be done in the recipient's own or taken-over general practice, in the public health department, or during specialist training at the Elisabeth Clinic Schmalkalden. In return, scholarship holders must commit to working in the county for at least five years after graduation.

There are three scholarships available in total for the upcoming academic year. Application documents can be submitted to the County Administration Office Schmalkalden-Meiningen at Obertshäuser Platz 1, 98617 Meiningen. If the enrollment certificate is not yet available, it can be submitted later.
