605 All Star Band Honored in Los Angeles, While Supervisor Hahn Announces Gun Buyback Event

In a ceremony at the Board of Supervisors meeting at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration in Downtown Los Angeles, the 605 All Star Band, consisting of over 500 students and eight band directors, was honored for their performance in this year's Rose Parade. The band, a composite of students from eight high schools across three school districts and seven cities along the 605 freeway, ranks among the largest bands in the Rose Parade's history.

The 605 All Star Band's performance in the 2023 Rose Parade was significant as it marked the first time a composite band performed in the prestigious event. The group practiced extensively in the Norwalk streets ahead of the New Year's Day telecast, indicating both a community effort and a high level of preparation for this prestigious event.

Tom Philips, the Director of Instrumental Music at Mayfair High School, expressed gratitude towards Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn for her support and help in making the Rose Parade performance possible. In a show of appreciation, students presented Supervisor Hahn with a 605 All Star Band t-shirt, a framed photo of their performance, a pin, and a large banner thanking her for her support.

In other news, Supervisor Hahn announced that she will hold a gun buyback event in Artesia on Saturday, August 19, 2023. The event will be a drive-thru event, held in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the City of Artesia.

Meanwhile, Supervisor Hahn will also hold a Pride Flag Raising Ceremony in Downey on Monday. The ceremony will take place at the LA County Office of Education in Downey, weeks after the Downey City Council voted to stop flying the Pride Flag on city property.

Finally, the new name for the light rail line will be revealed on Monday, January 22, 2024. The new name for the light rail line is the winner of a previously unmentioned competition. On this day, Supervisor Janice Hahn, LA Metro leadership, and local leaders will unveil the new name for the light rail line from Downtown Los Angeles through Southeast LA to Artesia. The ceremony will offer a chance to celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture of these communities.
