1,900 Scientists Raise Alarm on Trump's Impact on U.S. Research
A group of over 1,900 scientists, including members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, have raised alarm about the Trump administration's impact on the U.S. scientific enterprise. They warn that the nation's research infrastructure, built over eight decades, is being dismantled.
The scientists, led by author Steven Woolf, expressed concern about various actions taken by the administration. These include investigations into over 50 universities as part of an anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) effort, which has created a 'climate of fear' among scientists. Additionally, federal scientists at NASA, USGS, NOAA, and EPA have faced terminations, some of which were later reversed by federal judges.
The administration has been manipulating scientific research, funding, and data access based on political interests or disliked results. This includes climate change research, which is a critical area for the nation's future. Woolf fears that cuts to health research and vaccine regulatory work will negatively impact the health and life expectancy of U.S. residents. Despite the release of the 'SOS' letter, firings of scientists have continued, with the Department of Health and Human Services initiating terminations of 10,000 employees.
The scientists' letter emphasizes that everyone benefits from science and stands to lose if the nation's research enterprise is destroyed. The Trump administration's actions, if left unchecked, could have severe consequences for the U.S. scientific infrastructure and, by extension, the American people.
